Peter Cole, who grew up in suburban Melbourne Australia, visited Fiji in 2000, as a secondary student on school holidays.
Mr Cole saw children kicking around empty bottles and playing rugby with coconuts, for lack of regular sports gear. Peter decided he could do something about it and make a difference in Fiji, rightly regarded as a tropical paradise.
Peter Cole felt that many schools back in Australia and their students had an excess of sports goods, which could be extremely beneficial to children in Fiji. So began the Spirit of Sharing, moving surplus materials from Australia and New Zealand to make up the shortfall in Fiji. The idea blossomed and the focus widened to include a number of communities in the Asia Pacific region.
Spirit of Sharing is a not-for-profit organisation, which Peter started in 2000 on that visit to Fiji.
It began with the delivery of footballs and cricket bats to schools and youth/sports clubs in Fiji. Since then, the scope has increased each year. Equipment delivered these days includes balls for netball, volleyball, and rugby, as well as educational materials, water tanks, medical equipment.. and the building of a dormitory to provide boarding accommodation at a secondary school for children from outlying communities. SOS is dedicated to providing a sustainable environment for children of the Asia Pacific.
